John R Satchwell, Project Officer for the Restoration,
gives us his June update |

I’m sure those of you who visit the park regularly will agree that the restoration project is now in full swing. The foundations for the new wall adjacent to the Sandwell Valley Sports Pavilion are in place and the brickwork has now started. Over the next few weeks, improvement works to the walls will continue along the King George Playing Fields boundary and the boundary alongside Sandwell Valley. Construction of the new Sandwell Valley entrance will also be starting soon, and we are currently finalising the method of working with a specialist Reservoir Engineer to ensure that we do not compromise the structural integrity of the dam that contains the boating lake.
We are also working hard at completing the works along the Main Avenue, as I recognise that the closure of this area is causing some inconvenience to park users. In the interim we have opened a pedestrian gate near to the main entrance that can be accessed from the Reform St car park.
Contracts have finally been signed on the multi sports arena known as an Adizone, which will be located on the former site of the paddling pool, so hopefully adults can exercise whilst children have fun on the play equipment. We are currently in discussions with the contractor regarding commencing construction of this facility. Ideally we would like it to be completed prior to the School summer holidays but if this is unachievable then we will start work on this project after this period.
Following discussions with the Friends, we are committed to bringing a bandstand back into the Park. This is obviously dependent on the support from Heritage Lottery and whether the budget could manage this additional cost.
The skateboard park has generated lots of debate recently, particularly in respect to the proposed location on the former playground site towards the Dagger Lane entrance. I am proposing to undertake a consultation with residents, members of the friends and local skateboarders on the suitability of this location or whether a new location should be sought. I would appreciate your support at this event, so please look out for further details on the Friends’ website and this newsletter. Thanks again for your patience and support for the restoration of Dartmouth Park.
